A few months ago I did a review on my holy grail liquid black eyeliner. If you haven’t seen the post you can click here to read it. Since then I have tried to find an equally good, less expensive version for some of you.
I came across Aurora Cosmetics NY ‘Intensely precise Eyeliner Pen’ in th Ipsy points section so I decided to give it a try seeing how it looked very similar to my favourite liner, which is almost worn out.
I wore one on each eye for over a week now – let’s see how they compare!
Kat Von D Tattoo Liner: $19
Aurora Cosmetics Eyeliner Pen: $12
KVD is a bit more expensive, is the extra $7 worth the splurge? Keep reading to find out my opinion!
As you can see in the picture the Aurora eyeliner is slightly bigger than the KVD eyeliner. I couldn’t find exact amount of it anywhere online though. The Kat Von D one is 0.02 OZ.
Kat Von D Tattoo Liner: This is what they call blackest black – it is quite intense and dark.
Aurora Cosmetics Eyeliner Pen: This is more of a flat black, not as dark as the KVD one but still nice.
*underlined claims are ones that were accurate**
Kat Von D Tattoo Liner: Cruelty free – Vegan – Highly pigmented – Waterproof – No fade – No melting – No cracking – Run resistant – Easy application – Safe for sensitive skin/eyes
Aurora Cosmetics Eyeliner Pen: Vegan – Cruelty free – Easy application – Smudge free – Safe for sensitive skin/eyes – Highly pigmented – Long lasting
Kat von D definitely leads here – all claims on the KVD liner were 100% accurate. Where as the Aurora one followed through on some but not all.
Kat Von D Tattoo Liner: The felt tip is so soft and precise making application painless and easily flawless. It dries fast, once it is dries it is not going anywhere all day. This liner will look the same at 11pm as it did at 7am with no cracks, missing wings, smudges or anything. It will look the EXACT same as when first applied. You can go swimming on the first date and as long as you don’t tear or rub your eyes constantly is will last through the date. After washing the swatches on my hands and rubbing just a little bit this was barely different and not faded at all.
Aurora Cosmetics Eyeliner Pen: This had great pigment on the back of my hand and on the days when I only put eyeliner on. However it was tough to put on over shadow. It did not glide on nicely – I had to press down a little harder which was uncomfortable. The felt tip on this is nice but it doesn’t have much give to it. It was good for a thicker wing but I found it a bit difficult to perfect a small wing because the very tip of this pen isn’t as small. As for long-lasting I would say yes and no. This does last until the end of the day but it does have some cracking and quite a bit of fading. This does not last through water at all. I washed my hand once and this was gone.
Summary – Kat Von D
Pros: Long wearing, staying power, waterproof, smudge free, easy to use, amazing pigmented, precise application, dries quick, crack free, fade resistant, melt free, run resistant
Summary – Aurora Cosmetics
Pros: Cheaper, slightly bigger, smudge free, good pigment, dries quick, melt free
Cons: Not waterproof, fades, cracks slightly, hard to apply with shadow
Is the KVD liner worth the extra splurge? YES! For all the benefits of the KVD one such as water resistance no fading/cracking/melting/etc. The Aurora one is nice, I find myself wearing it on my lazy days when im not doing much and just want some liner and mascara on. For anything else I will definitely be turning to and sticking with the KVD Tattoo Liner.
