Ok I am not huge on television, in fact I haven’t had cable in 5 years. With that being said, I do have Netflix and watch the occasional show here or there. I also have a thing for Historical Drama’s though and characters that are easy on the eyes, might I add there are TONS of them on the show I’m about to talk about. A few years back I was visiting my mom when I saw the commercial for a new series ‘Reign’ that was premiering at the beginning of October 2013, that is when it all began.
Reign is a television series that is loosely based off of the history of Mary, Queen of Scots during the years she lived with Francis, Played by Toby Regbo, the next king of France. I say loosely because after season 1 they highly fictionalized the series with killing off characters that in history would not be dead yet and a few other plot twists, but Season 3 looks promising when it comes to bringing back some huge historical moments.
If you have not seen the series yet I highly recommend it. It is not on Canadian Netflix but I have heard from a few people that it may be on the UK and USA versions. Warning: you will be hooked, binge watch, eat unhealthy, shows excessive happiness, cry, scream, and all around be sucked into this show once you start watching. The people they chose are perfect for the roles. Adelaide Kane, who plays Mary, is phenomenal at keeping her character real and relatable with every situation that is thrown her way, good or bad. She truly takes you on the journey with her.
The first season opens in 1557, with Mary living in French court and awaiting her marriage to Prince Francis to whom she has been engaged since they were six. Throughout the first season this is the opening narration, “Since Mary, Queen of Scotland, was a child the English have wanted her country and her crown. She is sent to France to wed its next king, to save herself and her people – a bond that should protect her, but there are forces that conspire: forces of darkness; forces of the heart. Long may she reign.”
The second season opens after the death of a monumental character, and follows the rise of Francis and Mary of France and Scotland. Together they have to balance their marriage with their new roles in the castle, and deal with the rising religious conflict, a love triangle and much, much more.
Season 3 has tons coming its way from the introduction to a sneaky Queen Elizabeth, played by Rachel Skarsten, who wants to take Scotland, to A main character dying ultimately changing the course of everything.
In the first two season Reign was nominated and won a number of awards including 2014 People’s Choice Awards, and Favorite New TV Drama. Being a Canadian who has Irish and Scottish heritage I personally adore the fact that this American historical drama series is mostly filmed on location in Toronto, rural Ontario and Ireland.
So go forth lovelies and Watch season 1 and 2, or just jump in and Watch Season 3’s premiere, ‘Three Queens, Two Tigers’ tonight on CW at 8pm ! Be caught in betrayal, intrigues, love affairs and disappointments that take place in the court of France.
